Boncoeur’s Back with a Bang!

Boncoeur resumed after a 12 month lay off due to bone chips on Saturday with a tenacious win in the Merrylands RSL Club Hcp over 1100m.

Looking far from wound up in the mounting yard prior to the race, Boncoeur, with a bit of a belly and still showing signs of his winter coat, he looked to have plenty of room for improvement following his year long enforced spell from racing.

After being a little slow to begin, Boncoeur and jockey Darren Beadman were able to make full use of the number 1 barrier and made ground to be sitting behind the leaders on the fence. On straightening, a run presented itself and Beadman sent Boncoeur straight through it and put enough of a gap between himself and the rest of the field to ensure a well deserved victory.

On returning to the jubilant owners, Beadman was full of praise for Boncoeur. “He is a real racehorse this fella. He just wants to race and he wants to win. He started to get a bit tired at the 200m but he just wanted to win. That was the difference.”

Full praise should go to Trainer Kris Lees who has taken his time with the horse and been able to get a win first up with the horse, but also still leave plenty of improvement in the horse for the coming weeks.

Vegas Racks Up Win No 3

Our Vegas Dream made it 3 wins from 4 his last starts today at Hawkesbury when comfortably winning the Vaughan & Monaghan Insurance Brokers Class 2 HCP over 1400m.

With Dale Spriggs keeping his 100% winning strike rate on the horse in tact, Vegas jumped and went straight to the front and was travelling into the straight where he booted clear and never looked in danger winning by a length from Crowns in Credit with a further length and three quarters to Strategic Partner in 3rd place. Vegas clocked 1:23.10 for the 1400m coming home his last 600m 34.20.

Trainer Kris Lees deserves full credit for how he has placed Vegas this preparation. Having had a very disrupted start to his preparation with the flooding and storms in the Hunter region, Vegas has now won 3 of his only 4 starts this prep and a start in the metropolitan area now looms on the horizon for this bulky son of Belong to Me.

Beyonce’s Back in Form

Beyonce’s Star returned to the Metropolitan area today and partly atoned for her first up disappointing performance when she zoomed home for 3rd in the Bigpond Hcp at Randwick.

Having been sent back to the provincials and back in distance at her previous start, the extra race experience seemed to turn the filly around and after jumping awkwardly from a wide barrier, she relaxed in what was a slowly run affair and zoomed home for third place.

Had she not been held up from the top of the straight, Beyonce’s Star would have definetly finished second. Her final 400m sectional was the second quickest of the day in all races at Randwick and she now has her hoof on the till and will challenge strongly in a suitable race in the coming weeks.

Our Vegas Dream Brings Up 100% Strike rate for Sports Syndications

Our Vegas Dream lobbed along in front and kicked clear in the straight to score a convincing 2 and 1 / 4 length win in the Tooheys New Maiden over 1100m at Gosford today and in doing so registered a milestone for Sports Syndications by providing them with a 100% perfect strike rate of runners to winners.

Ridden by Dale Spriggs, Vegas was a little slowly away but was able to use his inside barrier to advantage and strode to the front where he was rated to suit himself. As they turned for home, “Dasher Spriggs’ allowed Vegas more rein where he quickly put paid to his opposition to score easily.

Vegas has been the victim of the storms that have recently caused havoc with the Newcastle/Central Coast/Hunter Valley region. He has been accepted to race at 3 meetings but these have either been abandoned or roads have been closed due to floods making transport impossible.

In the mounting yard before the race, Vegas looked in need of the run with a wooly coat and carrying some extra condition. Dale Spriggs also reported he had a good blow after the race and that will only do his fitness the world of good which all goes well for his immediate racing future.

Sequalo Sires the Winner of the Qld Guineas

Sequalo has added the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) to his list of feature wins as a Sire following the win of Sequential Charm and in doing so, defeating glamour filly Gold Edition. Sequential Charm won the race by a half neck from J’Ardane and Danleigh finished third, a length and a quarter in third.

Making it a great Queens Birthday Long Weekend for Sequalo was Sequallen who won the QTC Lightning Handicap (Listed) over 1000m. Sequallen ran 58.49 on a slow track and won by a length and a quarter defeating Sectagonal and Words of Magic a half head away in 3rd spot.

These 2 stakes win reinforces Sequalo’s status as a quality bread and butter sire who can always produce winners all over Australia.

Tim Martin Joins Sports Syndications Training Ranks

Multiple Group 1 winning Sydney Trainer, Tim Martin, has agreed to train for Sports Syndications commencing from 2008.

Tim, who is based at Rosehill, will join Kris Lees as a trainer of Sports Syndications horses. He will be involved in training a horse for the upcoming Club 1000 and will be involved in the 2008 yearling sales and syndications with the Sports Syndications team.

Sports Syndications Director, Steven Seabrook is thrilled that Tim has agreed to train for our owners. “Tim is very highly regarded not only as a trainer, but as a superb judge of yearlings and even weanlings as shown by his purchase of Golden Slipper favourite Murtajill out of the Magic Millions Weanling Sale.”

“Exceed and Excel and Gonski are other horses that Tim has been involved with from the time they were yearlings and both have been highly sought after by studs and breeders for Stallion duties, as no doubt Murtajill will be also in the years to come.”

“Tim’s ability to select excellent yearlings fits in very well with our philosophy of having the trainer heavily involved in the selection of our horses as we believe that the trainer selecting the horse is also putting his reputation on the line as well as our own.”

“We look forward to working with Tim and combining for much success in the years to come.”

Beyonce's Star Makes a Winning Debut

Beyonce’s Star charged down the outside to make a winning debut in the 58 Days ‘Til AAMI Golden Slipper Day Plate over 1100m at Canterbury tonight.

Trainer Kris Lees is hoping Beyonce’s Star could make it back to back Inglis Classic’s after he won the race last year with Absolutelyfabulous as well as moving Sports Syndications further up the dias after Boncoeur finished 3rd in the same race last year.

Beyonce’s Star was sent out unwanted in the betting ring after blowing from $13 to $26 and she struggled to keep up with the hectic tempo early on and settled back towards the tail of the field but in the straight the filly was taken to the outside of the field and had an unimpeded run to hit the front inside the last 100 metres before forging clear.

”Provided she comes through this race ok, she’ll have enough prizemoney to get into the Inglis Classic, so we’ll push on,” Lees said.
”It was a good win she is still very green and was slow to begin.
”She’ll be improved for the experience of that and has a bright future.”

Beyonce’s Star 56kg ($26) (Z.Purton) defeated Etoile Fille 56kg ($3.20) (D.Beadman) by a half length with Closet Rocker 56kg ($3.40) (C.Munce) two and a quarter lengths away in third. The fillies ran the 1100m in 1.05.31 and covered their last 600m in 36.53.

Beyonce’s Star is out of the first Australian crop of Arrowfield’s former shuttle stallion Orientate, out of the Pompeii Court mare, Concert Star and was purchased by Sports Syndications for $50,000 at last year’s Inglis Classic sale.

Our Vegas Dream returns in fine style

At Wyong today in the McNamee Constructions Maiden Handicap over 1200 metres, Our Vegas Dream returned from a spell with an encouraging second place behind the stakes placed Woodlands Stud horse Spiel.

Having only his second race start, “Vegas” was beaten by 1 and a quarter lengths in the very good time of 1:10.22. In the race, Spiel was able to cross from his wide gate and was given an easy time in front and this proved the difference in the end. Vegas trailed Spiel throughout the race and peeled off his back as they straightened, but he was not able to bridge the gap, but tried right to the line.

Jockey Allan Robinson on returning to scale said “They basically gave the race to the winner. They coasted after 400m and sprinted home the last 300m. In hindsight, I should have kicked up on his inside but I would have had to use up my horse which would have told in the finish. He needed the run but he tried hard and a win is not far away for him.”

Trainer Kris Lees said the run will do him the world of good. He will be fitter next time in and we will look for a maiden race around the provincials.”

Bondi Beauty finishes the year off in Style

At Scone today, in a Ratings 70 race over 1300m, Bondi Beauty, burdened with 57kg proved too strong in the Ilala Stud BOBS 0 – 70 Handicap.

Given a fantastic ride by Dale Spriggs, Bondi Beauty was the only horse in the run that you wanted to be on and she proved too good to dash clear on straightening and win by half a length from the fast finishing Western City. Not the largest or robust of horses, Bondi Beauty carried the 57kg well and was still able to maintain a turn of foot which showed her class over her rivals.

Trainer Kris Lees seems to have found the key to this mare by spacing her runs and allowing her time to get over each race. “She showed ability as a filly and we always thought, based on how she finishes her races and on breeding that she would be able to get over a longer trip, but when we would step her up, always in metro races, she would disappoint.”

“She does not carry a lot of condition so we now space her races and try and keep her to 1200 – 1300 metre races and since we have done this she has won 2 and finished second in 3 starts. We will just keep her fresh and look for another suitable race in a month or so”

Carnegie Prince breaks his Maiden Status in Style

Today at Newcastle, Carnegie Prince won his first race in the Michael and Corey Spero Maiden Plate over 1200 metres.

Starting as the shortest priced favourite of the day, in front of massive crowd of about 20,000 spectators, Carnegie Prince gave his supporters little to be worried about as he won racing away from his opponents by 2 and a half lengths. His stable mate Leica Dance ran second. The time for the race was 1:12:39 with a last 600 metre sectional of 34.90 secs.

On returning to scale, winning jockey Dale Spriggs stated that the horse had settled a lot better this start. “He found the front easy enough, although I could have put him wherever I wanted to, he was traveling that well in the run. As we turned for home, he seemed to switch off and when he heard the other horses starting to come at him, he switched back on and was full of running at the winning post.”

Winning trainer Kris Lees, who was in Sydney with a winning double at Randwick, was very pleased with the win. “He did not beat much in the way of his opposition, but he did it well and continues to improve. We will now look step him through his grades and see what potential he has.”

Carnegie Prince Resumes with a promising second

At Wyong today on Singo’s Magic Millions Slipper Day, Carnegie Prince resumed with a very promising 2nd in the Boral Masonary Maiden Handicap over the unsuitable trip of 1100m.

Having his first run back from a spell, Carnegie Prince was a bit stirred up before the race and on his way to the barriers, he made jockey Dale Spriggs work for his fee to get him there. On jumping, Carnegie Prince jumped well and was in the box seat after the first 400 metres. He was then asked by Dale Spriggs to move up on the inside of a horse, but he was not that keen on doing so.

In the 200 metres that it took to get on the inside of this horse, Chris Munce on the leader and eventual winner, My Lord, skipped about 4 lengths clear of Carnegie Prince, now in second spot and that gap proved just beyond him. Carnegie Prince, having to do all the chasing himself just missed and ran second defeated by half a length. These two horses gapped their rivals with 3 and a half lengths to the third horse.

The time for the race was 1:03.13 with a last 600m sectional of 34.95. The other division of maidens ran the same trip in 1:03.60 while a Class 5 race was won in the time of 1:02.86 which shows the time in Carnegie Prince’s race to be very good for a maiden.

Trainer Kris Lees was very happy with the horse’s performance. “He raced fresh today and was not the best mannered horse before the race. He sweated up and he had a good blow after the race which indicates he will be improved by the run and hopefully his manners will improve as well. He will also be suited on a bigger track over more ground, so there are lots of positives to be taken from this run.”

Bondi Beauty finishes 2nd

Bondi Beauty returned from a freshen up to run a much improved 2nd in a Class 3 race over 1200 metres at Newcastle today. After jumping, Bondi Beauty was allowed to find her feet and settled back just worse than midfield. As they got to the middle stages of the race, the speed slackened and the field bunched.

On the turn, the Beauty was traveling well but had nowhere to go. At the 200m mark, a split appeared and the Beauty speared through but the winner, Another Zena, was off and gone and the Beauty finished 2nd, beaten by 2 lengths. In saying we were held up, it must be said, that we only would have finished closer to the winner, we would not have beaten it.

Having only its third start, Another Zena, took its record to 3 wins from 3 starts and will certainly win more races based on its effort today.

The Beauty will race again in 3-4 weeks as this is how she races best. Only a light mare in condition, Bondi Beauty does not handle the rigors of racing every 2 weeks.

Australian Trainers Tour of New Zealand 2006

Sports Syndications own Steven Seabrook was invited to travel to New Zealand by New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing (NZTM) as part of the Australian Trainers Tour. An initiative of NZTM, the aim of the tour is to showcase New Zealand breeding and bloodstock including stud visits, stallion parades and yearling parades for the upcoming 2007 Karaka Yearling Sales Series.

Some trainers to attend the Tour, which was in it’s 4th year included John O’Shea, Tim Martin, Kris Lees and Scott Morrissey from NSW. Victoria was represented by Danny O’Brien, Matt Ellerton, Peter Moody, Tony Noonan and John McCardle while Mark Kavannagh and Richard Jolly came from South Australia, Lindsey Smith and Michael Grant from Western Australia and Dale Sutton from Queensland.

All up, the tour visited more than 15 properties through the Waikato, Hamilton and Cambridge regions of the North Island. These included Cambridge Stud, the home of Zabeel and the late Sir Tristram, Waikato Stud, Haunui Farm, Windsor Park Stud, Trelawney Stud, Rich Hill Stud, The Oaks and Pencarrow Stud, the home of Ethereal.

The hospitality of all involved in the hosting the tour party was nothing short of sensational. The quality of the farms is outstanding and the conditions that these properties are currently in are vastly different to those being endured by their Australian counterparts.

Highlights of the tour included a magnificent function at Waikato Stud which was hosted by Gary, Mark and Lisa Chittick who are experiencing a golden run with their stallions at present. These include Pins, who has added a number of Group 1’s to his growing list over the recent Spring Carnival, both here in Australia and in NZ. The first Savabeel foals have arrived over the Spring and they look outstanding and will certainly be met with great support when they reach the sales ring and No Excuse Needed received a lot of interest in the Recent Ready to Run Sales held in November.

On the Tuesday night, Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan hosted over 120 people at their famous Cambridge Stud. After parading some of their yearlings that are currently being prepared for the 2007 Karaka Series of Sales, including a colt by Sunline, he presented his Stallions including Zabeel and Stravinsky. The tour group then settled in to a Marquee at Zabeel Place and mingled with many breeders from all over New Zealand.

Carnegie Prince wins Barrier Trial

Carnegie Prince barrier trialed this morning at his home track in Newcastle over 800m and had an impressive win by 2 and ¾ lengths. Racing in a 3yo Maiden trial, he traveled 3 wide with the leaders before moving clear when placed under minimal pressure and quickened to score impressively.

Ridden in the trial by Dale Spriggs, they traveled easily in front and Dale reported that he was having plenty of looks around and would have liked someone to put some more speed in the race, but when he gave him a squeeze he moved clear and could have won by more if he had been asked for more.

On returning to scale, Carnegie Prince would not of blown out a candle and trainer Kris Lees will now look to place the horse in a provincial maiden in the coming weeks.

Bondi Beauty earns win No_3...

Bondi Beauty returned to the winners list in the Willow Tree Hotel Hcp over 1300 metres at Scone today. Ridden by Dale Spriggs, ‘The Beauty” jumped out well and was given time to find her feet in the run as there was a fast pace in the race.

Rounding the home turn, Dale Spriggs moved her away from the fence to improve and tried to bump the horse to her outside out to open up a gap. She was only moderately successful at that and she was coaxed through a small gap and showed tremendous fight to score after being nearly a length off at the 200 mark to score by a nose from Donna Uccello. The Beauty is not a horse that likes to be on the inside of other horses and she does not like racing in narrow gaps so her effort to win despite these circumstances showed a newfound confidence. The time for the race was 1.17.80. There was no sectional time available.

Bondi Beauty has now had 9 starts for 3 wins and 1 third with her team of owners now looking for class 3 race in the metro area in the coming weeks.

What Might Have Been...

During the 2006 Classic Sale, Sports Syndications took interest in 2 lovely fillies. They were lucky enough to secure 1 in the current available syndication of the Orientate/Concert Star Filly.

The 2nd we were not able to secure. It was a filly also by a relatively unknown Sire to Australia in Twining out of Spurani, the mother of Suspended Time, trained by Kris Lees. This filly was purchased by Tony Karakatansis for $80,000 (Sports Syndications being the under bidders) and she had her first barrier trial at
Rosehill this morning.

Racing under the name of Goldam, the filly ran away for an easy trial win by 3 lengths in a time 2 seconds quicker than the 2yo Colts and Geldings and marginally slower than the open class horses. She will no doubt be headed towards the 2007 edition of the Classic Race,
unfortunately though, she won’t be in the Sports Syndications colours.

We do wish her owners the best of luck with her.

Vitesse Dane back in the Winners Enclosure

Qld Oaks winning filly Vitesse Dane has again found the winners feeling after 15 months of racing without success due to illness and injury.

The now 5 year old mare had a tough year last year having a short break after her magnificent deeds during the 2005 Brisbane Winter Carnival where she won the Oaks before finishing a desperately unlucky 3rd in the Qld Derby the following week. Following a short spell she returned to race in the Melbourne Spring Carnival where she was found to require surgery to her throat for a wind problem.

She returned to Sydney the following Autumn and was on track for a start in the Sydney Cup when she took ill and needed to have over 20 litres of blood drained before heading out for a spell.

This preparation, the stable has been on tenderhooks, hoping she could come back to somewhere near her best after a year they would like to put behind them.

Having accepted for the $90,000 Port Macquarie Cup and the $175,000 Group 3 Craven Plate on Super Saturday at Randwick, Trainer Kris Lees opted to go to Port Macquarie. “This race suited her down to the ground at this time of her preparation. She is a Group 1 winner who was looking for this sort of trip and she was thrown in with 53.5kg. She has been showing encouraging signs at home that she was getting back to somewhere near her top following her third in a welter and then her last run where she was unsuited by a slowly run mile.”

“The most pleasing aspect of her win was that she wanted to win. When she is giving her all, she has a tendency to lay in and get her head to the side. We will now go to the Tatt’s Cup at Randwick in a fortnight.”

The mare is also nominated for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Boncoeur To Have a Forced Break

Having taken a little while longer to get over his gutsy run in the Listed Run to the Roses at Rosehill last week, Boncoeur has been found to have bone chips in both front knees and will require surgery and a spell for at least 6 months.

Trainer Kris Lees was very disappointed when hearing the vet’s report. “It is disappointing for not only the horse, but also for the connections. He is a very tough and courageous horse and you knew every time he raced, he would give 110% and be competitive.”

“He usually needs a couple of light days after every run, but he still was a bit scratchy at trackwork on Monday morning, so we got the vet to have a look. He is real tough, this bloke. He did not flinch on any of the flex tests of the knees that the vet did, but we took some x-rays to be sure and there were the bone chips.”

Surgery is booked for early next week and a spell of 6-8 months is on the cards.

“We will look to restrict him to sprint races in the future and the winter in Brisbane next year will come too soon for him so we will wait till spring of next year. It will not hurt the horse to have some extra time off either. It will help him by not putting any pressure on his legs before they are ready.”

Boncoeur Gives All His Heart Again

Boncoeur ran a gallant 3rd today at Rosehill in the Listed Run to The Roses Qty Hcp over 1300 metres. Stepping into black type racing for the first time in his short racing career, Boncoeur jumped well and was perfectly ridden by Michael Rodd to be trailing the leaders, sitting on the fence.

As they turned the corner for the run home, Rodd moved Boncoeur off the fence around the leaders to give him his chance to chase them down. Whilst he was a little wayward round the turn, he quickly balanced up to give chase and at the 200 mark he had taken the lead. In chase was He’s No Pie Eater and Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner, Mentality.

In a spine tingling finish, Mentality got the photo by a nose from He’s No Pie Eater and another nose away in 3rd was Boncoeur. 10 metres before the post Boncoeur was in front but he could not withstand the charging finish of Mentality, who managed to get his nose right down on the line.

On dismounting, Michael Rodd was full of praise for the courageous son on Show A Heart. “What he lacks in class this bloke, he makes up for in heart. He never stopped trying. His run had peaked at the 200m and I though he would get to the line in 3rd spot beaten by a length or 2, but he just kept putting in and 5 metres out we were still in front.”

Trainer Kris Lees was again very pleased with the horse’s effort. He tries all day and continues to improve. This race has been won by the likes of Eremein and Paratroopers in previous years and he has gone within a whisker of winning it himself. We will now accept for the Golden Rose but will need some luck to make the field as he is down the order of entry, but you never know.”

40% Stakes Placed Horses to Runners for Sports Syndications

Boncoeur’s courageous 3rd to proven Group 1 winner, Mentality, has helped his syndicator Sports Syndications to an impressive 40% strike rate of Stakes Placed horses to runners and could so nearly could have been 40% Stakes Winners to runners for them.

Beaten a nose by a nose into 3rd place, Boncoeur continues to show tremendous fighting qualities in his races.

“He will provide a great deal more joy for his owners in the years to come. He has only raced on 6 occasions for 2 wins and 3 thirds for $71,000 in prize money” says Director Steven Seabrook.

“When we ran 3rd in the Inglis Classic in February, you would of thought Boncoeur’s owners were the owners of the winners. They were celebrating like they had won the race, which was great.”

Boncoeur now joins Vitesse Dane as the company’s Black Type Club with the now 5 year old mare having won the Group 1 Queensland Oaks in 2005.

Boncoeur Finishes a Fighting Third

Today at Rosehill in the Rosebud “Men of League Charity Status Hcp”, Boncoeur finished an unlucky but gallant third over 1200 metres. Whilst not winning, there were many positives to be taken out of the run.

Having his second run after a spell, again on a rain affected track, Boncoeur was slowly away and immediately last, nearly 2 lengths behind the 2nd last horse after 100 metres. At this point jockey Hugh Bowman eased the horse out and under his own steam, had the horse traveling well.

Approaching the home turn, Bowman began his move 5 wide around the field and at the 300 mark, he looked like he was going to blow his rivals away. However, at the 150 metre point where he was slightly in front, his run had ended and in a slogging finish, he just missed, beaten a short head by a half head.

On returning to scale, Hugh Bowman was “very impressed” with the horse. “He is a real tryer. I moved around Darren Beadman (who rode the favourite, Slow Waltz) to box him in at the 500m, so I started my run a bit soon. As a result, he had peaked at the 200m, but tried all the way to the finish. And he was not 100% comfortable on the heavy track either.”

Trainer Kris Lees was ruing the slow start. “If he jumps with them, he gets a lot closer and probably gets the winner to take him into the race. Instead he was wide all the way and had no one to take him into the race and had to do all the work himself. We will see how he pulls up, but on that run, he deserves a chance to earn a place in the Golden Rose, so we will come back in 2 weeks for the Run to the Roses.”

Classy 2yo by Show of Heart, Boncoeur showed his typical

Courtesy of www.leesracing.com.au The comments below were taken from the Lees Racing website on Monday 17th July 2006.

“Runners were sent to Kembla on Saturday on a heavy track and the classy 2yo by Show of Heart, Boncoeur showed his typical bulldog toughness by ploughing through the going to win his first win back from a spell.

Boncoeur is raced by the very successful Thoroughbred Syndicators, SPORTS SYNDICATIONS. Sports Syndications have only a few horses on the books but are very astute in their selection and this shows in their remarkable strike rate. Boncoeur showed his ability winning his second start then running a great 3rd in the Inglis Classic.

Given what the stable has already seen of their next crop of youngsters, more winners and class performers will race under the Sports Syndication colours.”

15th July 2006
Boncoeur - 2 Wins from 4 Starts

Boncoeur returned following his recent spell and gave his owners an immediate return with a tough win in the Bulli Hospital 2 Year Old Open Handicap over 1000m.

Having his first start since his courageous 3rd in the $500,000 Inglis Classic at Rosehill in February, Boncoeur (which is French for Good Heart) showed plenty of ticker in overcoming some obstacles in the run.

As the horses were being loaded into the barrier, Come On Strop went off in the gates and was a late scratching from the race. This meant the previously loaded Boncoeur, was left in the gates for 4-5 minutes before they jumped. As a result, he missed the start by a length and was immediately last.

This poor start, combined with top weight of 57.5kgs and a slow track required a horse with a lot of courage and commitment to overcome these difficulties. Boncoeur is one such horse and he gathered in his opponents at the 200m mark to eventually win by ¾ of a length with a further length and ¾’s to 3rd place.

On dismounting, Jockey Allan Robinson, who has had 2 wins and a third on Boncoeur from 3 rides, said that the horse “showed a tremendous amount of guts, it was a very good tough win.”

Trainer Kris Lees has stated the horse will move into town now and try to improve on his already impressive record of 4 starts for 2 wins, a 3rd and over $55,000 in prize money. His only failure was his first start where he was beaten by subsequent Group 2 winner Danleigh by only 4 lengths, if you can call that a failure.

Carnegie Prince Continues to Encourage Owners

Carnegie Prince had his 2nd race start at Canterbury today with an encouraging 5th despite racing 3 deep for the trip in a 2 year old Class 3 Handicap over 1250m.

After being a little slow to begin, jockey Larry Cassidy went looking for a forward position only to have no luck and be forced to race 3 deep without cover just behind the leaders. During the run, Carnegie Prince showed his lack of race experience by showing a variety of different tendencies including over racing, laying in and shying away from horses, traveling on the bit to needing be scrubbed along.

Approaching the home turn, Larry Cassidy gave him a couple over the rump to get his mind on the job. He whacked away over the last 200m to finish 5th, beaten only 2 and a half lengths despite his wide run and not being comfortable on the slow track.

After returning to scale, Larry Cassidy stated that “he was a big baby who did not know what he was meant to be doing out there. He definitely needs blinkers so that he concentrates, more distance and a bigger track. Based on what he did today he will make a very nice horse with time and maturity.”

Carnegie Prince will now be spelled to allow him to develop and mature further. We all look forward to his return to the track in a few months time.

Carnegie Prince Begins his Racing Career

Sports Syndications newest addition to the racing ranks, Carnegie Prince kicked off his racing career with an encouraging 4th at Warwick Farm today in the Balmoral 2 year Maiden Hcp over 1200m.

After being a little slow to begin, jockey Jamie Innes booted Carnegie Prince into a forward position to be in the box seat, one out and one back. After his initial effort, the Carnegie gelding showed his lack of race experience by over racing from the 800m to the turn.

After turning for home, a small run appeared between the 2 leaders, but Carnegie Prince lacked the experience to take the run and it soon closed on him and he had to ease back slightly, losing valuable momentum. At the 200m there was more room for him to come through the gap and this time he came out the right side of it and went to the finishing line stylishly to finish 4th, 4 lengths from the winner on a slow track.

After returning to scale, Trainer Kris Lees stated that he would gain great benefit out of the race, both in fitness and experience. “He appeared to have peaked on his run 100m out but kicked up again over the last 50m to grab 4th spot. I am very happy with that run and it will be of great benefit to him.”

First Winner for Orientate.

Eclipse Award winning sprinter Orientate (Mt Livermore - Dream Team by Cox's Ridge) made the perfect start to his stud career when he was represented by his first winner from his first starter when 2yo filly Lost On Champagne won at Hollywood Park on Thursday.
The Sal Gonzalez trainee led all the way in the 4 ½ furlong contest to win by a length in 52 3/5 seconds.
A $15,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Lost On Champagne is out of the stakes-winning and Grade 1 placed Saratoga Six mare Champagne Glow.
Hero of the 2002 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) and Forego H. (G1), Orientate shuttled to Arrowfield Stud in 2003 and 2004 but struggled to attract a commercially viable number of broodmares, serving just 41 and 58 mares respectively.
He currently stands at Gainesway Farm, Kentucky, for a fee of $20,000.

Bondi Beauty Returns in Fine Style.

In the last race of the day at Newcastle, Bondi Beauty (Danasinga/Sandarac) produced a sizzling turn of foot to blow her rivals away when she resumed from a spell to win the First National Real Estate Class 2 Hcp over 1200m. Scoring by a length and a half, Bondi Beauty could easily have won by further, but was given an easy time by jockey Allan Robinson when he let the filly cruise to the line.

After jumping well, Robbo let the filly find her feet and placed her where she wanted to be in the run. Upon straightening, Robbo eased out to the center of the track where she produced a sizzling sprint to score easily. The final sectional for the race was 34.47, but Bondi Beauty would have clocked sub 34 seconds as she was about 5-6 lengths of the leaders at the 600m mark.

On returning to the winner’s enclosure, Robbo stated that the filly has improved lengths since her last preparation. “She relaxed really nicely and the way she accelerated was very impressive, she had them covered at the furlong and we just cruised to the line. I would be looking to take her to Sydney now.”

Trainer Kris Lees was also very happy with the filly’s performance. “Since she has come back from her spell, she has continued to improve and I thought she would run a nice race today, although I did not think she would go that well. We are trying to see if the filly can get over some more ground but I think that the turn of foot she showed today will take her a fair way.”

Boncoeur Tries His Heart Out

In the $500,000 2 year old Inglis Classic, run today at Rosehill, Boncoeur (Show a Heart/Good Heavens) ran a courageous 3rd to stablemate, Absolutely fabulous.

After drawing the extreme outside barrier in the field of 16, Boncoeur, ridden by Allan Robinson, jumped only fairly but sped to the front and crossed the entire field to lead. As they turned for home, many would have thought that after such a huge early effort, he would be entitled to weaken and the swoopers would pounce. But this courageous little fellow would hear none of it and at the 300m, he skipped away to lead all comers by 2 lengths. It was only at the 100m that he was claimed by the winner and inside the last 50m that the eventual runner up got past him.

At the very juicy odds of 80/1, the owners were ecstatic on the horses return to the enclosure. It was hard to tell which set of owners had won the race as the Sports Syndications syndicated team of owners were over the moon. They were also very happy to hear the comments made by Robbo on his return. “Very gutsy horse this bloke. I rode him at Scone the other week when he won and something just did not feel right about him, he was jumping at shadows and very inexperienced. Today he finished 3rd on raw ability and heart. If you send him for a spell now, you will have a much better horse later on.”

Trainer Kris Lees was lamenting the horses barrier draw. “He worked with Ab Fab on Tuesday morning and their was nothing between them, which surprised me a little as I thought the filly was flying and on that track work and with a bit of luck in the barrier draw, he was a good chance of running a cheeky race at a decent old price. But now, if he gets a good barrier, he would have been right there with the winner. “

Tuesday January 31st 2006

Boncoeur (Show a Heart/Good Heavens) today won his first race at only his second race start. The race was run at Scone and although it was only a 2 year old maiden, Boncoeur confirmed the plans of trainer Kris Lees by winning enough prize money to rise up the order of entry for the 2006 $500,000 Inglis Classic Race to be run at Rosehill on February 11th.

Ridden by Allan Robinson, Boncoeur began well and was able to retain the inside running throughout the race. At the 400 metre mark, Honour Bay and Notradrama both began to make their runs and apply pressure to Boncoeur, but the Show a Heart Colt was able to show great determination and held on to score by a short neck from Honour Bay. The time of the race was 1:04.54. This was only 0.6 seconds outside the time for the open class race won by Chester County.

On returning to the winner’s enclosure, jockey Allan Robinson told the stable that he ran very greenly at different stages throughout the race and appeared to be jumping at shadows. Down the straight though, he refused to give up and his determination prevailed on the day as the other challenges had every opportunity to beat him in the run to the line.

Boncoeur has its first race start Today at Canterbury, Boncoeur (Show a Heart/Good Heavens) had its first race start on a wet and rainy day. On a track officially rated as a slow 7 and amended after the race to a heavy 8, Boncoeur raced in a 2 year old Maiden Handicap over 1100m.

Connections were very happy earlier in the week when the horse drew barrier 1 as it is a huge advantage for 2 year olds having their first start. However with the slow track rating and continued rain before the race, the rails was a no go zone and not the place to be.

After starting very well, Boncoeur held its position with the leaders before Danny Beasley on Air Raid moved across from out wide to the rails to take the lead. Tracking this leading horse, Boncoeur settled well and as they quickened just before the turn, Boncoeur tried to go with the leader, but as the rails was not the place to be, when he attempted to quicken, he could not go with the leader. At this point, another runner moved up on its outside and kept Boncoeur on the rail where he stayed right to the line.

On dismounting, jockey Zac Purton said that he traveled well in the run and when they quickened before the turn, he seemed to slip and slide around the corner and lost some momentum and confidence. He kept whacking away to the line and would do better on a dry track and over further ground.

Trainer Kris Lees, whilst hopeful of a better finishing position, was happy with the effort. “Considering the fence was not the place to be and it was his first start, he tried to the line and will be improved in both fitness and experience.”

The race was won by Daneleigh. Boncoeur officially finished 5th and was beaten by 4 lengths.

2005

Sat 15th Oct 2005

Bondi Beauty (Danasinga/Sandarac) raced today and won the DCL Engineering Fillies and Mares Maiden over 1400m at Broadmeadow. Ridden by Terry Jones, the still to physically immature 3 year old, scored a gutsy and determined win after traveling 3 and 4 wide for the entire trip courtesy of it’s third consecutive wide barrier draw.

Having only her third race start, the filly is raced in partnership with former Australian and New South Wales Rugby League Forward, Bryan Fletcher. The filly now has a record of 3 starts for 1 win and 1 placing. Last start she ran a very good third in what has turned out to be a very strong form race behind Seek the Truth and Flying Alpha. Seek the Truth has subsequently ran 2nd in a 3 year old Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday Oct 8th. Flying Alpha also scored a most impressive victory at the same Rosehill program after missing the start by 2-3 lengths.

Bondi Beauty will now be spelled and given an opportunity to mature and strengthen before returning to race over some longer distances. The filly is out of the same family as 3 Oaks winners including, Tully Thunder, Sandy’s Pleasure and Sandarae, as well as the very good filly Spurcent who was placed in the Caulfield Guineas.

Thursday 6th Oct 2005

Boncoeur (Show a Heart/Good Heavens) had its first barrier trial today at Gosford. After beginning well, Boncoeur was forced to sit 3 wide facing the breeze after 2 other horses kicked up on his inside. The talented youngster, raced in partnership with Wallaby Flanker/No 8 George Smith, raced very professionally for his first hit out of any substance and went to the line without being fully tested to score a long neck victory over stablemate At The Roxy with another 2 and ¾ lengths to Magic Keith, in third spot.

The time for the 800m Trial was 48.87 with the last 600m in 34.59. This sectional was the fastest sectional of the 8 trials held which included trials for open class horses. Boncoeur will now be spelled for about 4-5 weeks before being brought back into work with trainer Kris Lees intending to give the colt, who is out of a half sister to speedsters Hot as Hell and Flaming Hot, his opportunity to make the 2006 $500,000 Inglis Classic race to be held in February.
