Bird Mites are very minute creature's barely visible to the naked eye but are an extremely mobile mite, measuring 0.1-2.0mm in length, oval in shape and with a sparse covering of short hairs.

Bird mites are semi transparent in colour, which makes them difficult to detect on the skin until blood in ingested and then digested this is when they may appear reddish to blackish.The bird mite is a parasite feeding on the blood of birds. Bird mites have unsegmented abdomens and 4 pairs of legs in the adult stage.

The development of a mite involves an egg, larval, nymphal and adult stage. The larvae have only 3 pairs of legs, the nymphs and adults have 4 pairs. The life cycle usually occupies approximately 7 days but within these 7 days they are capable of reproducing an extremely large population. Birds being the host for the bird mites are a common pest to the human particularly in the spring and summer months. Bird mites can be avoided with a simple pest inspection.

The infestation of the bird mites within your home or workplace begins as the birds begin to build their nest or after the babies have left the nest as this then leaves the bird mites often many thousands of them with no host or food leading the bird mites to search for a new host and food. The materials used for the birds nest provides an ideal environment for the bird mites to thrive.

When the mite is searching for a new host they begin biting the human.
