Termites live in colonies, which are a collection of different individuals with specific functions or tasks. The size of the colony varies from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands or even millions. Some species build mounds, some nest underground and some live in small colonies in the wood of trees.
In Australia the Subterranean termite can be found throughout mainland Australia. They prefer the warmer climates of NSW (Sydney) and upwards throughout Queensland.
The termite soldier has a brown head and white body with tong like jaws used for protecting the colony, and measures up to 12mm. The queen termite with a life span of up to 20 years lies in centre of the colony never to be seen outside of the colony and is capable of reproducing up to 1000 eggs per day!
The termite workers are responsible for feeding the queen termite and building the colony and measures up to 6mm, throughout the warmer months of the year termites will take flight from the nest to start a new colony. These are called the recolonising termites, amongst these flying termites there are potential future queens for a new colonies.
After mating the queen termite begins to establish a new colony, preferring ideal conditions of dampness and warmth in an old tree stump, stacked wood etc to establish her colony. This makes termites an all year round problem.
Termites being the most destructive of all wood infesting pests attack timber as they feed mainly on a substance called “cellulose” a major component of the timber.
Due to the termites continuously feeding from the timber this then leads to the complete destruction of the timber.
It is important to note that a steel framed structure is not safe from termite attack. A CSIRO study found that brick and steel framed structures are equally at risk from termite attack as termites will attack other cellulose based materials contained within that structure such as window frames, timber doors and skirting boards.
